Statistics and Probability: Part II - WHat they don't tell you about success in school and success in life.

Statistics and Probability: Part II

School is a place where were hear a lot about statistics and probability also.  Unfortunately, there is a lot of statistics that they don’t tell us about.

They will tell you that if you are of a certain race, or if you have only one parent, or if your parents don’t make much money that you are less likely to do well in school.  It almost sound that if you are of a certain race, or if you only have one parent, or if your parents don’t make much money you might as well not try – you are doomed for failure anyways.

What they don’t tell you is that not all students of a certain race fail in in school, and not all students with only one parent fail in school, or that not all students whose parents don’t earn much money fail in school.  They also don’t tell you that there are reasons that students who do well in school actually do well.

We know that students who attend class, pay attention, take notes, and actually do their homework assignments usually do well in school: no matter what their race, no matter how many parents they have at home, and no matter how much money their parents earn.

We know that students who attended classes, paid attention, took notes, and did well in their classes last year, will probably continue to do well this year.

Saying you had a bad teacher last year is a waste of time.  Teacher’s are all perfect, but if most of the students in your class did well and passed the class – well they had the same teacher that you did – what’s your excuse?  Do you think that maybe not attending class, not paying attention, no taking notes, and not doing your homework might have had anything to do with it.

There is an old saying that “If you always do what you always did, you will always get what you’ve always got.”  If you want things to change, be the change you want to see.

The truth is, you can do more to change and improve your life that your family, your teachers, and your bosses can improve your life.  I also have found that your family, your teachers, and your bosses will do more to help you if you are doing stuff to improve your life.

There will always be students of any race that fail, and there will always be students from all kinds of families that will fail, and there will always be students from rich and poor parents that will fail.  What every race you are, and whatever kind of family you came from, you can always to things to improve and change your future – if you want to.

We also know that not every student who tries to improve their life is successful at improving their life as much as the wanted to, but they also improve their life to be better than what it would have been if they had not tried.
